If you've been engaged for longer than, say, a month, you've likely heard some of the more common traditions, like wearing "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue," but all across the globe there are much more, shall we say, interesting traditions.

1. Sudan - The Neur tribe in Southern Sudan believe that if the woman fails to bear two children, the groom can pursue a divorce.

2. Fiji - Not only are men expected to ask their father in law for his daughters hand in marriage, they are also expected to bring him a whale tooth. Excluding the black market, the only place in the world to get a whale tooth is in the mouth of the largest mammal on earth, which also happens to spend most of its time underwater. Now that's true love!

3. Ireland - When the bride and groom are dancing the bride’s feet have to stay on the floor. The Irish believe that if they don’t, evil fairies will come and sweep her away because evil fairies like beautiful things and, of course, the bride is beautiful. The fairies can only get to her if she is not touching the ground.  I think this is adorable!

4. Sweden - Whenever either the bride or groom leaves their table to use the bathroom the other gets kissed…a lot. If the groom has to go then every male in the reception will get a chance to kiss the bride and vice versa.

5. Yugur (an ethnic Chinese minority) - The groom will actually shoot his bride with a bow and arrow before the wedding…three times. The arrows don’t have arrowheads, but it's still like getting shot with rubber bullets. The groom will then collect the arrows and break them, thus ensuring that they will love each other forever.

6. India - The groom is required to take off his shoes before approaching the wedding altar. As soon as he does this mayhem ensues. Everyone from the bride’s side of the family tries to steal them while everyone from the groom’s side of the family tries to protect them. If the bride’s family succeeds in their endeavor, then they are allowed to hold the shoes hostage until they get paid a ransom.

7. The Congo - In order for the marriage to be taken seriously the bride and groom are not allowed to smile throughout the entire ceremony.

8. France - The groom may meet his fiance at her home on the day of the wedding and escort her to the chapel where the ceremony is being held. As the couple proceeds to the chapel, children will stretch long white ribbons across the road which the bride will cut as she passes.

9. Finland - It is tradition for the bride-to-be to walk from house to house with a pillowcase to collect her wedding presents. While she walks from house to house an older, married man walks beside her, holding an umbrella or parasol over her head as a symbol of protection and shelter.

10. United States - Although to Westerners it seems normal, to most of the world a white bridal dress is very strange. In most countries the bridal dress is very vibrant and full of color. This tradition started with Queen Victoria in 1840 when she donned a white dress in her marriage to Prince Albert. In her day, this was very controversial because the color white was associated with mourning.
